Matt Vickers

Matt Vickers, founder of MVM, is a certified massage therapist who specializes in both classic therapeutic massage, rehabilitative and sports massage.

A native San Franciscan, from an early age Matt was always fascinated by the complexity of the human body and its inner workings. This led to a desire to become a part of the medical field.  He became a nationally registered EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician) which gave him his first real taste of body mechanics and systems.  Shortly thereafter, he then decided to take a deeper look and chose to learn even more about anatomy, physiology, pathology, and kinesiology as he went through massage therapy school.  He completed over 730 hours of training at the National Holistic Institute.  He knew he had found his calling and a direction for his practice was chosen. After developing his sense of touch in the diverse and challenging settings of UCSF, and the Equinox Fitness Center, Matt went back to the class room and has expanded his knowledge and tools with the addition of studying Myofascial Therapy and Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques.

So, Just What is Sciatica?

A professer of mine once mused that "we have not fully evolved to bipedalism."  While not strictly accurate, it calls to mind basic weaknesses inherent in all of our spines.  When our ancestors began walking upright, what they gained in mobility and use of theirs hands, they lost in stability of their spines.  In other words, walking upright is very hard on our backs.

Sciatica is often characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Constant pain in one side of the buttock or leg

  • Pain that is aggravated when sitting

  • Pain that is often described as burning, tingling, sharp or a constant dull ache

  • Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot

  • A sharp pain when trying to sit up or stand up

While not recommending that we all start walking on our hands and knees, I know there is a lot we can do to keep our backs healthy and strong.

Don't live in pain.  Call today for an appointment.
